German police have arrested the suspected gunman after a shooting at a youth welfare facility in Stade, northern Germany, left six people dead and several others injured.
The death toll, initially reported as five, rose after a sixth victim died in hospital, according to police. The victims were all adults. Several other people were injured, some seriously.
The shooting took place on Monday at a facility on Dankersstraße, south of Stade town centre. The centre provides temporary accommodation and support for pregnant women, young mothers and children.
Footage published by Bild appeared to show the moment police stopped a car believed to be carrying suspects as it approached a roadblock. The vehicle came to a halt before heavily armed officers moved in and ordered the occupants out. Two people were seen being forced to the ground and detained.
Police have confirmed that the suspected shooter has been arrested. Two other people are also being questioned as investigators examine whether they were involved in the attack.
Authorities have not yet confirmed a motive. German media, including Der Spiegel, reported that investigators are examining whether the attack may have been linked to personal disputes connected with the facility. Police have so far said there is no indication of a political or extremist motive.
The incident triggered a major emergency response, with police, ambulance crews and forensic teams deployed to the area. Residents were initially told to avoid the scene, although police later said there was no continuing danger to the public.
A daycare centre and a primary school are located near the scene. Local officials said children and staff at both facilities were safe.
