The latest announcements of the excavation team in Amphipolis may have led to admiration with the reveal of the mosaic on its full extent, however , the big question still remains unanswered. What lies behind the deterioration of the circle shape around the center? What caused it? Why the deterioration was only on that spot, when all the remaining surface is intact?
The head of the excavation Ms Katerina Peristeri estimates that the damage does not appear to be a natural deterioration of time. A fact, that once again raises questions as to whether the grave was undisturbed and what was depicted in the missing section.
However, Mr Pesisteri avoided to give a more clear answer as to if she believes that the tomb has been looted and merely said that the damage” makes no sense”.
