Hiking in Mount Athos: A once-in-a-lifetime experience

The unspoiled nature, the numerous old footpaths criss-crossing the area, and the interesting flora and fauna will impress even the most seasoned hiker.

Newsroom November 3 02:59

Mount Athos, otherwise known as Holy Mountain (Agio Oros in Greek) in Northern Greece is a unique male monastic community that comprises of 20 imposing monasteries.

This amazing mountain is famous for its natural beauty and also for the fact that it has been out of bounds to all women for more than 1000 years. The reason of the prohibition of entry for women can be traced back to the Orthodox belief that Mount Athos was consecrated as the garden of the Mother of God.

This secluded place, accessed only from the sea, remains the only place where the visitor can experience life as it was during the times of the Byzantine Empire.

It also an ideal destination for hiking enthusiasts: the unspoiled nature, the numerous old footpaths criss-crossing the area, and the interesting flora and fauna will impress even the most seasoned hiker.

The distances between monasteries vary from a few minutes to several hours. On the way you may find quite a few fresh water springs and due to the fact that there is very little traffic, the only noise that you’ll hear will be the singing of the birds.

There are also many beautiful wooden kiosks at lovely locations so you can catch your breath during a long trek. At the monasteries, you can rest and enjoy a treat, a cup of coffee and a glass of cold water before heading to your next destination.
