Archaeologist Manthos Besios briefed an audience about the excavation at Ancient Pydna and the excavation of ancient tombs at before and after Alexander the Great’s campaign. Mr. Besios has worked at the Pydna region for 34 years. He refered to the fortified settlement of Pydna that is surrounded by tombs that date from 3,000 B.C. to the 4th Century B.C.
Mr. Besios talked about the Pydnas monument and the damage that has occurred due to pillaging in antiquity and in modern times.
Pydna was one of the most important urban centers due to its port and strategic location. The siege of Olympias by Cassander took place at this region in 316-315 B.C. and there were two battles there from 168 B.C. and 148 B.C.
The finds in the region prior to Alexander the Great were simple whereas they were adorned with gold and other treasures that soldiers brought back from the East following Alexander the Great’s campaign.
