Philae audio excerpt released by ESA

Listen to the two-second sound

Newsroom November 21 11:41

Further evidence on Philae’s landing on comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko was made public by the European Space Agency.

The audio excerpt only lasts two seconds, but the ESA supports that it is the sound made by the robot during the historic landing of November 12th.

Scientists argue that this small sound sample is not enough for them to reach many conclusions.

The sound was recorded by the Cometary Acoustic Surface Sounding Experiment (CASSE), which uses sensors on the edge of Philae’s “feet” to determine conditions on the landing surface and layers below it.

“Philae came into contact with a soft layer, a few centimeters thick. After milliseconds, the feet met a hard, probably frozen layer on the comet”, stated the ESA.
