18-year-old unarmed Antonio Martin was shot by officers in the St. Louis area just a month after a grand jury decided to not indict police officer Darren Wilson who shot Michael Brown.
The recent incident occurred at 11.15 p.m. St. Louis time. The officer saw two male suspects and approached them and the officer fired several shots, fatally wounding one of the men who allegedly had pulled out a handgun and pointed it at the officer. The second man managed to escape the scene.
Hundreds of protesters, still angered by the death of Michael Brown and Jordan Baker, took to the streets. They let off fireworks at a gas station and smashed shop windows.
Toni Martin, the teen’s mother, tells another story. She says that her son was there with his girlfriend at the time of the shooting. Photos reportedly showing Antonio’s girlfriend with him at the time of the shooting were released by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Dozens of Twitter users claim that the teen shot was unarmed contrary to police statements.
The shooting comes at a time when there is fierce debating on the link between race and police interactions. The United States police are also widely criticized for their brutality when treating suspects, especially those of African-American descent.
