Close to 300,000 people gathered at Chenyl Square in Shanghai to see in 2015. People were crushed when there was a rush to pick up fake money thrown from the balcony of a nightclub at around 11.30 p.m. local time. 36 people were killed and 47 were injured.

The traditional New Year fireworks had been cancelled on the Bund due to fears of overcrowding, and President Xi Jinping has called on the Shanghai government to investigate the crush.
