New York is known for its millionaires and its luxurious skyscrapers with the obscene rents. Yet this same US mega-metropolis has broken yet another record. 60,000 homeless people live in its streets.
The number of homeless has increased by 11% compared to January 2014 when it was 53,615 people.
Families are 80% of the homeless population, with 25,000 children out of a total of 60,352 people.
Liberal New York mayor Bill de Blasio promised his administration would alleviate the problem by the end of 2015 and said military veterans and the elderly will be put in appropriate homes provided by the city.
