Yanis Varoufakis: He walks among us… (video)

Since SYRIZA won the elections, Greeks are getting used to rubbing shoulders with their politicians

Newsroom February 8 08:00
Flamboyant Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis may be one of the most sought after men of Europe but he hasn’t changed his habits. Not only does he meet with heads of state in “casual”, almost lounge-like, attire, but he also continues to live an ordinary life without bodyguards.
Here he is in Athens’ main Syntagma Square, carrying a backpack and rubbing shoulders with the everyday folks in the city, footage by Kimon.
He’s made it clear in speeches and interviews that the people surrounding him are those that inspire him, often referring to their specific problems. Taking on his ministerial post hasn’t changed this attitude, or so some fawning media outlets claim. Rather than lock himself in an “ivory tower” — as so many “celebrity economists” tend to do — he prefers to be out among the people, something rare for Greek politicians.
Of course, that “simple touch” obviously hinges on … success, because any “credit incident” would probably lessen public appearances in the country to zero.
