Thirty-two respected Portuguese personalities, among them politicians, businesspeople, academics and unionists have asked Portuguese PM Pedro Passos Coelho to shoot down the continuation of the implementation of austerity on Greece, according to Portuguese newspaper “Publico”.
“The idea that the austerity policies must continue, is non productive”, state the editors of the open letter and call for Coelho to adopt a stance which does not “humiliate” other EU countries.
“Portugal must not distance itself from a movement of European cooperation and must take active part in a talk of reviewing the economy and social politics of countries that have suffered the worst for the last six years”.
On his part, the Portuguese PM said he will not support any proposals of debt cancellation or re-evaluation, which will burden the solidarity of European peoples.
