The more-or-lesss predictable vote in Parliament for a new president of the republic starts around 20:00pm

Prokopis Pavlopoulos was the individual proposed by Alexis Tsipras’ coalition government. Interestingly enough, Pavlopoulos was in the New Democracy government between 2004 and 2009 but had expressed his dissenting opinion on the sacking of state employees, characterizing them as unconstitutional.

Everything points to the fact that Pavlopoulos’ nomination will easily succeed, as he is backed not only by the coalition government, but also by New Democracy and PASOK.

Out of the 300 MPs in Parliament 180 will be needed to elect a new president in the first round. If unsuccesful, 150+1 will be needed.
