MPs vote in favor of SYRIZA deal with lenders

Government explains the deal in detail

Newsroom February 25 02:00

Following a long and detailed report of reforms in Parliament, MPs voted in favor of SYRIZA and its deal with the lenders.

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras spoke before his party’s Parliamentary group and proceeded to detail leftist SYRIZA’s first month in office up until a controversial 11th deal with eurozone creditors.

According to government sources, the PM spoke of difficult negotiations and underlined what he called the “the government’s achievements so far”, as such:

-Separating the loan agreement from the memorandum

-Breaking off from the MoU and its austerity framework

-An intermediate deal which gives a “breather” to the people and “allows us to avoid a scenario of fiscal asphyxiation, which would render the anti-memorandum government obsolete”

-An end to outrageous primary surplus targets (>3% of GDP), as he called them

-Normality in the fiscal system

Tsipras mentioned the list of reforms, stating that “we managed to replace requirements with a series of reforms and goals which are the aims of the Greek government, which in turn, constitute a partial application of the Thessaloniki program mandated during elections.

The PM spoke of the challenges the government is yet to face, such as the details of reforms that the list entails. He underlined that the aim is to build up the government’s validity in the eyes of the Greek people. He also said that the rebuilding of credibility with European partners through the implementation of reforms is also needed.
