Self-styled anarchists took over the headquarters of the ruling Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) party in downtown Athens on Sunday to protest against conditions in the country’s maximum-security prisons.

Sources said a group of 50 “anti-state” activists hung banners asking for the abolition of maximum-security jails, the release of convicted N17 terrorist Savvas Xiros, due to severe health reasons, as well as for the release of friends and relatives of ‘Conspiracy of Cells of Fire’.

Xiros is practically blinded in one eye, has lost most of his hearing and half his right hand, amongst others, after a bomb he tried to plant at the port of Piraeus in June 2002 exploded prematurely.
