Varoufakis’ April Fool’s joke: Greece to run on Bitcoin

See the Greek FinMin's tweet

Newsroom April 1 04:50

Yanis Varoufakis on Wednesday issued his own little prank on the occasion of April Fool’s Day to his followers on Twitter, with a message that included a link to an article describing the Greek FinMin’s new “ambitious plan” for the salvation of Greek economy: That Greece starts running on bitcoin!

The article, which was published by the website Greek Reporter as an April Fool’s prank, claimed that “while Greece’s lenders are pushing the Greek government to accept their terms in order to allocate funds so the country will not go bankrupt, Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis seems to have another ace up his sleeve.”

Citing sources close to the FinMin, the article goes on to say that today Yanis Varoufakis “held a top secret meeting with high-ranking finance ministry officials to prepare them in case negotiations at the upcoming Eurogroup fail,” and that, during that meeting, he stated: “We‘ll go to Bitcoin, we will be ahead of all the world economies and although it may be painful in the beginning, Greece’s economy will thrive in the long term.”
