Bloomberg reports that main opposition leader Antonis Samaras, who lost the prime minister’s seat to the Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) snap elections on Jan. 25, is reportedly willing to join a “unity government if the concessions required to win emergency loans drive a wedge through the ruling anti-austerity coalition.”
Samaras, the president of centre-right New Democracy, told Bloomberg that he questions SYRIZA’s commitment to remain in the single currency, stating that it is the “only conceivable economic path for Greece.” He said the “spillover effect from Greece leaving the euro” wouldn’t be as big today as it would have been four years ago.
Regarding the government, Samaras says he sees a lot of words, lies, theories and “histrionics” but no action. That is why he wants the government to honor the list of commentments agreed on February 20 to extend the bailout agreement. He states that the only other avenue is default.
