Armenians in Greece held a memorial service in Nea Smyrni, south of Athens, to commemorate the centennial of the Armenian genocide. The service was held at the memorial of genocide victims at Chrysostomou Smyrnis Square on Friday afternoon, before a gathering at Syntagma Square. Protestors then marched to the Turkish Embassy as a sign of protest.
Marchers were blocked by police on Vas. Sofias Avenue and Rigillis streets, near the embassy, where they sat in protest, holding a candlelight vigil.
The National Armenian Committee believes that 1.5 million Armenians died in Turkey in 1915 as part of a Turkish national cleansing program. The descendants of the people who suffered want recognition of the event by the Turkish government.
An Armenian Youth rally was also held at Aristotelous Square in Thessaloniki where there was a similar march to the Turkish consolate.
