“Love Your Local Market” kicks off in Greece

Giving Greek local markets the recognition they deserve

Greek “Love Your Local Market” (LYLM) celebrations run through to May 31 in Greece with the motto: “Eat Right, Shop at the Local Market.” Festivities include a number of events around the city. These include:

* Central Athens Market (1 Kennedy St., Agios Ioannis Redi) has events that run through to May 23 with chef George Glynos arriving with his Food Truck from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with Pontian food.

* Enjoy the snacks by food bloggers Funky Cook, Gourmelita and Madame Ginger from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on May 23 by the Greek Gastronomy Museum.

* Children can learn the secrets of good nutrition thanks to workshops by the Efpalinos group from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Central Athens Market on May 22.

* Stigma Lab graffiti artists use good nutrition as their inspiration in creating artworks on the 300m wall at G. Papandreou Avenue until May 23.

* Tours on yachts for schools and live cooking events at the Piraeus Fish market from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 24 and May 31.

* The Municipal Market of Kallithea (Davaki Square) features treats and food tasting from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

* An international Instagram Contest titled “I Love My Market” invites young people to send in photos from market events.
