Main opposition New Democracy party leader Antonis Samaras on Friday called on PM Alexis Tsipras to restore Greece’s battered credibility, speaking after the latter in Parliament during an off-the-agenda session where the radical leftist premier first briefed deputies on the “Greek issue” — amid a particularly negative week for Athens.
“Instead of bringing forth tax cuts, you brought forth a tax raid. You brought the country to its knees domestically and maligned the country abroad,” the previous PM told MPs in a televised address.
He also said that although ND party was not afraid of snap elections, nevertheless, such a prospect would devastate the country.
Moreover, in answer to Tsipras question on whether the opposition will support the SYRIZA proposal, he responded: “Bring the final agreement and we will tell you.”
“It is insolent to demand that we express our position on whether we agree with the creditors’ proposal or yours,” he charged.
In order to find a middle ground with the opposition and reach a consensus on the domestic front, Samaras said SYRIZA must first ends its smear campaign and also stop coddling Greece’s cavernous public sector.
“I am fighting for the private sector,” he stressed.
Samaras also accused Tsipras of lying about negotiating with the country’s lenders.
