Both Athenians and tourists from abroad have embraced it as one of their favorite places, and numbers tell the whole story. Around 8 million people have visited the new Acropolis Museum since 2009, with an average of 4,000 people per day.

Today is its sixth birthday and it will be celebrated with brilliant events. The Museum is the first one of its kind specifically dedicated to the findings of the Acropolis archaeological site. It was built to house anything found on the sacred rock and its surrounding area, covering a wide time period, ranging from the Mycenean to the Roman and early Christianity periods.

It is found on the south of the Acropolis at a distance of 280 meters from the Parthenon. The architectural design is based on three major axes: Light, movement and the basic principles of architecture.

The Museum, in order to celebrate its six years, will begin a series of events with findings from outside Athens, in order for the people to come closer to lesser-known artefacts discovered in all corners of the country. This Saturday, the 20th of June, the “Samothrace: Mysteries of the Great Gods” exhibition will begin, giving people the chance to see the beautiful findings of the wonderful northern Greek island.

More events will follow, with the Wind Instruments Philharmonic and the Athens Municipality Choir presenting a concert based on early 20th century melodies, including songs from movies and Hellenic operetas.

Ticket prices on the museum’s birthday will be reduced.
