A Greek national was arrested on the Greek-Albanian frontier on Tuesday after attempting to illegally export … 23,000 euros into the neighboring country, with the cash hidden in a piece of luggage.
The woman, who declared 400 euros in cash, was travelling bus from Athens to Tirana, when her possessions were checked at the Kakavia border post.
A fine was levied against her for an illegal cash export, while authorities are also examining whether she violated capital controls still in effect on bank accounts in Greek banks — i.e. depositors can’t withdraw more than 60 euros of their own money per day, per account.
The woman will receive the money back if she can prove that the amount come from legal sources of income and has been taxed.
