Meteora: In the Heavens above (pics+vid+byzantine chanting)

Nature and faith

Newsroom August 2 10:30

The mystical Meteora (suspended) Mount Monasteries are perched on top of natural sandstone pillars in the area of Kalambaka, Thessaly in central Greece. They are considered an architectural marvel and are on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The monasteries are adorned with some wall frescoes and mosaics of exceptional beauty. The monastery complex comprises six Greek Orthodox Monasteries. The exact date the first monastery was built is unknown, but it is believed a small monastic community was set up around the 11th century AD. Meteora was the inspiration for the backdrop in a scene in huge HBO TV series hit ‘Game of Thrones’. Here is a video of the majestic Meteora with some sublime Byzantine chanting. A visit there should definitely be on your bucket list.
