German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble stressed that Greek people should answer the question: “Do you want to proceed to the necessary economic adjustment in order to stand in the global economy within or outside eurozone?”.
Mr. Schaeuble talked to German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine and explained that: “Each country must show that it is able to manage the adjustment process, which is necessary in order to stand in the global economy”.
Specifically for Greece, the German Minister noted that Greek people should answer the question: “Do you want to proceed to the necessary economic adjustment in order to stand in the global economy within or outside eurozone?”.
According to Mr. Schaeuble, “Samaras government was on the right track. Mr. Tsipras used the comprehensible growing concern of the Greek people because of the burden of this adjustment and promised to them: We will remain in the eurozone, but without a plan and without adjustment. Mr. Tsipras could not of course keep this promise. It took him six months to finally do the opposite thing”.
German Finance Minister explained also his suggestion to create a two-speed Europe noting that all countries “cannot or do not want to achieve the same integration steps simultaneously” and adding: “We never wanted to divide Europe, we wanted a Europe with a sort of flexibility”.
