PM Tsipras: UN’s vision has not been fulfilled

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras talked about immigration and economic crisis during his speech at UN General Assembly.

Alexis Tsipras talked about the UN foundation by saying that it has been 70 years since United Nations was established after the most devastating war, noting that UN brought hope for peace.

However, he said, up today UN’s vision has not been fulfilled, noting that now we are experiencing a huge humanitarian crisis with massive waves of immigration, increase of poverty and violation of human rights.

Referring to the refugee crisis, he said “We don’t believe that the future of Europe and our world can be constructed with increasingly higher walls of exclusion or with toddlers dying at our front door” noting that our ancestors were refugees and migrants. “We are making every effort to manage the influx of refugees in our country,” he added.

He also referred to Greece which, as he highlighted, has suffered a lot during the economic crisis.

Prime Minister said the bailout program signed by his government includes deep reforms and will allow the economy to stabilize by setting the foundations for a debt restructuring. He also said that Greece needs a growth agenda and not a new austerity agenda.

“We must realize that we need a global financial system that will address the challenges. We need to address the debt restructuring issue on international level, focusing on development strategies rather than on austerity strategies,” he said.
