Der Spiegel: Merkel and Juncker want “concentration camps” for 50,000 refugees in Athens

The Greek government is reluctant in implementing a plan that would conjure images of Nazi Germany

Newsroom October 24 05:27

German news source, Der Spiegel, has an exclusive reportage of plans to transfer refugee hotspots from the islands of Lesbos and Kos to a large center in Athens that would fall under the jurisdiction of Frontex and the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR). The plans are based on the fact that the Greek border islands cannot handle the influx. The idea would be to place refugees at Olympic Games facilities that would be able to hold 40,000-50,000 people.

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has already expressed reservations concerning such a plan, however European Commission President Jean Claude Juncker and German Chancellor Angela Merkel are doing their best to convince the Greek PM that the plan would work. Der Spiegel states that Tsipras is reluctant as it would conjure images of “concentration camps” run within the country by foreign officials.

The German magazine states that Merkel wants a mini-summit meeting to present proposals and improve the operation of hot spots, whereas Juncker will present a 16-point plan of practical issues at the special meeting on refugees. It is noted that there is a registration of refugees in Greece, but more than 4,000 arrivals per day are causing problems while many refugees are failing to submit applications for asylum in Greece because they fear that they may be deported to countries where they don’t want to go.
