Massive shark teeth washed up on eastern North Carolina beaches after recent storms unearthed them from beneath the ocean. Some of the teeth were about the size of an adult’s hand.
The fossilized teeth found in North Topsail Beach and in Surf City and it is believed that comes from a giant ancient shark the Megalodon which lived 15 million years ago.
As WITN reports, experts at the Aurora Fossil Museum say that by comparing today’s sharks and the length of their teeth, they estimate that every one inch of a tooth’s length equals ten feet. So a six-inch long tooth belonged to a Megalodon that was around 60 feet long.
Cynthia Crane, director of the museum, says fossils that had been hidden were disturbed. Along with rain and high tides, they found their way to shore.
