A Belgian shepherd dog, called Diesel, was killed on Wednesday as one female suicide bomber blew herself out during a police shoot-out with a number of suspected terrorists, that may have included the lead plotter of the Paris attacks, Abdelhamid Abaaoud.
A tweet by the French national police read: “Diesel, a seven-year-old Malinois, RAID assault dog, was killed by terrorists in the current operation.”
Brave dogs such as Diesel are trained to assist on operations where there is a risk of explosives and were “indispensable” to the elite SWAT unit.
Witnesses described hearing heavy gunfire and the sound of large explosions and grenades coming from the apartment building in Rue du Cornillon, Saint-Denis.
