The new Greek budget for 2016 hopes to save 5.7 bln euros. From these, 3.2 billion euros will be in new measures, whereas 1.5 bln euros will be yielded from austerity measures that have been voted on in 2015 or will be voted on by the end of the year.
The government appears to be “giving its all” to gather 3.2 bln euros worth of additional funds from taxpayers and another 2.5 billion euros from austerity measures with deep slashes to public expenditure.
To find extra money, the new budget for 2016 needs to scrape from the following:
– Cuts to social funds: 105 million euros less for heating fuel subsidies
– Cuts to pensions: 538.5 mln euros saved by increasing the retirement age (29 million euros), abolition of the minimum pension for those under 67 years (16 million euros) and another 470 million euros from social security reforms given by all funds.
– Increases to contributions: The government hopes to gather another 1.112 billion euros more – 712 million euros more this year – with measures that include a 6% contribution from main and auxiliary pensions (700 million euros for 2016) and for new measures to run in 2016. That is, 102 million euros from the increase to contributions for farmers from the agricultural social security funds (OGA) and a 223-million-euro reduction from the social solidarity pension benefit (EKAS) etc.
– Expect savings worth 25 million euros from the new salary benefis of public sector employees.
– New taxes and revenue increases: 3.2 billion euros for 2016, 2.2 billion euros more for additional funds fo 2015. New taxes worth 150 million euros for changes to contributions, 114 million euros from the increase of tax downpayments to professionals, 13 million euros for the abolution of tax returns for diesel to farmers, 32 million euros in income tax increases for farmers, 210 million euros for duties to OPAP games, 110 million euros that have yet to be fully chartered (such as wine tax and others to substitute the 23% VAT hike for private education that has been scrapped).
In total, a billion euros worth of revenue is to be yielded from income tax. New measures will also be enforced, such as a special solidarity tax to yield 377 million euros, 150 million euros extra from business contribution taxes, 28 million euros from the abolition for reduction of income tax payments made in full, 156 million euros from the increase of tax contribution for businesses and 78 million euros for the downpayment of taxes from farmers etc.
Furthermore, peope can expect 100 million euros worth of tax for leasing.
And just in case you were wondering, the hikes don’t end here. Another 22 million euros worth of funds are to be gathered from ticket increases in urban transport, 30 million euros extra from museums and 500 million euros more from Defence, etc.
