Melomakarona

A festive recipe for traditional Greek sweets. You will definitely love these small honey cakes!

Syrup ingredients

3 cups water

2 cups sugar

200gr (3/4 cups) honey

2 tbsp fresh lemon juice

Pastry’s ingredients

1 kg flour (7 cups)

2 cups sun flower oil

1 tbsp Cognak (or Brandy)

15 gr baking powder (2 tbsp)

1 tsp cinnamon

1 tsp clove

1 tsp pimento (allspice)

2 tsp baking soda

1 cup fresh orange juice

100 gr (1 cup) crashed walnuts

1/2 cup sugar

Preparation method

 

Making the Syrup

Step 1

In ia saucepan add the sugar in medium temp water, stir and then add the honey. Mix them until they are solved.

Step 2

Add the lemon juice, stir and then take the syrup off the fire and let it cool.

 

Making the pastry

Step 1

In a bowl, put the flour and then add sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, pimento, clove, and stir. Then add oil and knead all the ingredients.

Step 2

Add cognac and then add baking soda in the orange juice and then add the mix in the dough and knead, but not for too long otherwise melomakarona will become hard after baking. The dough has to be oily.

Step 3

Lay parchment paper on a tray and knead small egg-shaped melomakarona.

Step 4

Use a fork to cross the melomakarona and bake them in 200oC for 20′ -25 or until they get golden.

Step 5

Dip them hot from the oven in the cold syrup for 5-7 seconds and then sprinkle with the walnuts.
