Protesting farmers in western and central Macedonia continued their mobilizations on Friday and planned more coordinated action heading into the next week with road blocks around the country.
Episodes were noted in many cities around the country on Friday with farmers showing their displeasure by burning flags of the Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) party and spilling tons of milk, even in the party offices as was the case in Rethymnon, Crete, where farmers barged into the group’s offices. Carrying a Greek flag they emptied jars of milk on the floor. Others flung paints and eggs on the walls and tried to grab the party’s symbols.
The same group of protestors headed to the former municipality offices were they were greeted by vice-mayor of Rethymno Mary Lioni at the office’s courtyards. She asked them to accept the support of all workers and gave them a vote of solidarity.
The farmers spilled milk in the courtyard and the surrounding streets and asked citizens to support their efforts.
On Friday evening, farmers were at the central crossroads of Atsipopoulou on the National highway meeting to decide whether there would be more road blocks.
In Patra, farmers taking part in the road block at Achaia proceeded to a symbolic shut down of the port of the city and spilled tons of milk. They climbed on tractors and moved to the port. Early in the afternoon they left and closed the toll gates at Nestani for four hours from noon to 4 p.m.
On Saturday
A meeting is to take place at Tempi at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Roads are to close from noon to 6 p.m. with most other rallying points holding symbolic road closures on Friday. Blocks at the Promachonas customs on the Greek border crossing with Bulgaria will continue in the same way until Tuesday with passage offered only to private cars and coaches.
800 tractors at the Malgara tolls will continue to road the block from noon to 6 p.m. Vehilces heading toward the Agrotica trade fair in Thessaloniki will not be allowed passage.
The road block at the Kardyllia junction on the Egnatia highway is still in place with more than 800 tractors there. Side roads and access roads will intermittently be closed for half hour periods.
