European Commissioner on Immigration Dimitris Avramopoulos said Europe was at the high point of the refugee and security crises during a press briefing in Brussels. He added, however, that the two should not be connected, while stressing that Europe would remain united in the face of these two crises. ‘To those who want to divide us we respond with more solidarity, cohesion and strength’. said Avramopoulos. The Commissioner said that the Brussels terrorist attacks proved a closer coordination and exchange of intelligence was necessary between the agencies and secret services. “This is confirmed by the fact that the attackers were already known to authorities’, he said. Avramopoulos defended the common border Schengen Area stressing it was not the problem but safe movement within the area could not be achieved without correct control at the exterior borders of the EU. He called for the need to defeat the causes of terrorism and radicalisation.
