Greek Alternate Minister of Public Order and Citizen Protection Nikos Toskas said that the people living in urban areas have not ‘really’ felt the pressures of the refugee crisis, in an interview to state broadcaster ERT TV, Tuesday. He said that the ones that had exeprienced the problem first hand were the Greeks living on the borders, as there were no refugees in the big cities or on the highways walking around. ‘I do not want to cover up the problem, but it is under control and will be more so in the upcoming days’, he told the TV presenter. Toskas defended a statement he made on Monday that abused refugees or migrants could turn into ‘tomorrow’s jihadists’ commenting on the force used by the FYROM police at the Idomeni borders, when hundreds of migrants trying to cross over to the other side were met with tear gas and plastic bullets. Responding to criticism that FYROM police had entered Greek territory he claimed that the actual fence borderline had been pushed back, so there had been no violations. He insisted that he saw no controversy in his statements, while he admonished an ERT reporter on air who was filing a report from Idomeni camp saying that the her coverage of rumours about refugees crossing the borders should be avoided, adding that he spoke with facts and plans.
