Events on Nazi Distomo massacre have already started

Newsroom June 3 05:08

An event commemorating the battle of Crete in 1941 and the Pontian Greek Genocide is scheduled to take place ‘Goudi Park’, on Saturday, June 4 at 8.30pm. The event, which is jointly organised by the municipality of Zografou, the Pontian Union of Zografou and the ‘Nikos Kazantzakis’ Cretan Association of Zografou, will feature speeches, the screening of a documentary, traditional Cretan and Pontian dances and food treats. Dr. Aristotle Sygelakis, the president of the ‘National Council for claiming German debt to Greece’, and John Chatzieleftheriou, member of the Federation of the Pontian Genocide Committee, will deliver speeches on the topics.

Memorial events on the Distomo nazi massacre in WWII have already started and will culminate on June 10. The Distomo massacre was a Nazi war crime perpetrated by members of the Waffen-SS in the small village of Distomo, near Deelphi in western Boeotia, Greece in 1944. A total of 214 men, women and children were murdered on June 10, when German troops went door to door stabbing and bayoneting babies and pregnant women looking for partisan fighters.
