Greek PM Tsipras meets with US President Obama

Refugee crisis, economy and Cypriot problem discussed

Greek PM Alexis Tsipras met with US President Barack Obama on the sidelines of the Warsaw NATO Summit, Saturday. According to Geek government sources, the two men discussed the need for the exit of the Greek economy from austerity measures to be coupled with an effective reduction in public debt. According top White House sources, Obama urged Tsipras to continue the economic reforms program, while he offered his support to the Greek PM on the need to alleviate the debt. The US President recognised the progress Greece had made on the economic front, while he praised Tsipras on the collaboration with Turkey on the refugee crisis. During the meeting Tsipras noted the positive contribution the US had made on the debt reduction issue and requested the close cooperation with US Secretary of Treasury, Jack Lew. The Greek PM informed Obama on the important reform initiatives undertaken by the Greek government, while he asked for the backing of the US in his government’s effort to combat corruption in Greece and the conflict of interest between politics and economic forces. Another matter touched upon was the active diplomatic role of Greece in the wider eastern mediterranean region. The two men also discussed the Cypriot problem, with Tsipras stressing the need for a just viable solution based on the UN resolutions and the withdrawal of Turkish occupying forces from island. According to government sources, Tispras will also have meetings on the wings of the Summit with French President Francois Hollande, Italian Prime Minister Mateo Renzi and the Prime Minister of Portugal Antonio Kosta to examine ways to increase cooperation between the southern European countries in the issue of austerity. The same sources says that Tsipras met Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan and talked about the recent spite of terrorist attacks in Turkey, the Cypriot matter and the refugee crisis.
