Hundreds of aftershocks spread fear among Ioannina citizens (photos-video)

Public schools and universities closed until further notice

Newsroom October 16 06:30

A constant fear has gripped the locals of Ioannina, as over 200 aftershocks were recorded, 15 of which ranging between 4 and 5 on the Richter scale until after midday, following the major Friday night 5.5 magnitude earthquake. The Civil Protection branch of the city convened earlier, Sunday and called on the citizens to remain calm. The large 5.5 magnitude tremor hit Friday night, with houses, churches and roads suffering damage, although no injuries were reported. Many people slept in the outdoors or in their cars on Friday night. The frequent seismic activity is a result of tectonic plate shifts, according to experts. President the Earthquake Planning and Protection Organisation, Efthymis Lekkas underlined that seismic frequency could last up to days following the major tremor. The organisation has urged citizens to refrain from informing themselves from unofficial sources and disregard rumours and hearsay. The Civil Protection organisation has decided that schools and universities will remain closed, while the first division football match the local club Ioannina and Levadiakos has been postponed. People are instructed to avoid unnecessary transport with vehicles, while public services housed in sold buildings will also remain closed until the appropriate static checks have been conducted.
