Popular Greek actor George Vasileiou died on Wednesday morning, after battling with cancer for a long period. The 67-year-old actor, who had become a household name playing the role of a tough police officer in a long running successful TV series called “Lampsi”, was a heavy smoker and had come out about his health issues in September urging people to stop smoking. “I used to smoke two packs a day. What happened to me was because of smoking”, he had said in an interview. After the news of his passing away, his Facebook page was inundated by messages from fans and colleagues. Vasieliou was elected MP with conservative party New Democracy (ND) in the 2004 national elections and worked as a theatrical actor from 2007 onwards, after his parliamentary tenure came to an end.
