Heavy rainfalls in the Attica area during Sunday morning have caused serious problems in the city of Athens and surrounding suburbs. From 2.30am the fire department received hundreds of emergency calls for flooded house basements and trapped car drivers, while numerous streets were inaccessible due to the sudden deluge. Some metro stations were closed in the morning due to the rainfall. 20 fire department units with 45 officers were assisting in areas around Athens throughout the night to help people in distress. In the centre of Athens at Kypseli the fire fighters had to rescue a man trapped in his car on Evelpidon Street, while in the suburb of Menidi 3 people also required help after being trapped in their car on a central road. Similar problems were prorated on the island of Zakynthos on the west coast of Greece, with many people calling for help after the strong rainfall had flooded their basements, while others were in need of assistance after getting stuck in their cars in the middle of the road. The Greek Meteorological Services (EMY) forecast similar weather conditions with heavy rains will continue throughout Sunday.
