Daily showers are bad for you, studies suggest

Showering every day destroys necessary skin microbes

Newsroom January 25 08:59

Showers work like coffee for some, providing the stimulation it takes to wake up and start the day. Other people use them to wind down and relax after a tough day or difficult workout. But according to dermatologist Dr. Ranella Hirsch in an article for Essence, if you shower every day, it might not be good for you. Showers disrupt natural processes that occur on your skin and in your hair and nails. They also waste clean water, which so many people in the world lack access to.
This is news to my ears. Not just because I’m lazy, but because I hate the shower. There’s just so much to do in there. Plus it’s dangerous. I can barely walk on land without falling, so it doesn’t make sense to have me move around in a slippery shower with chemicals and razors in my hands. How I’m still alive is kind of a miracle.
If you, too, come close to death each time you turn on that faucet, or if you just wish you had a few extra minutes each week, you’ll be happy to know that limiting showers can make you healthier. It can also make you look better. True story. Here’s how.
Do you go to the gym every day or work in a chemical factory? If so, you should shower every day. Otherwise, you’re probably not that dirty.

In an interview with BuzzFeed, two dermatologists told readers that washing your skin every day removes the good, useful bacteria that keep your skin healthy. This bacteria acts like a shield against harmful bacteria. It also helps keep out toxins from chemical soaps, shampoos, perfumes, and other personal care products.
Washing your hair each day can strip it of natural oils, which can make your hair dull, dry, or frizzy. According to Andrea L. Hayden, Director of the International Association of Trichologists, you should be washing your hair two times per week, tops — especially if you have fine, weak, or damaged hair. On the days when you don’t wash, you can still condition to help rebuild moisture, according to Hayden.
