Alistair Overeem knocked out the mighty Samoan Mark Hunt in the third round of their UFC 209 Heavyweight bout in Las Vegas on Sunday, making it the Dutchman’s second victory against the Australian. Hunt was hit on flush on the chin by a brutal knee kick in the third round and hit again before tumbling to the floor. Hunt suggested later he suffered a broken tibia during the bout. But on Monday Hunt’s camp later amended things, saying that while Hunt was very sore, there was no broken bone and no serious injury. Hunt had launched several attacks on Overeem’s past doping violations before the fight and the action in the octagon was rugged. Overeem had by far the bigger number of strikes during the bout, landing with 59 of his 76 attempts, while Hunt landed 27 from 59.
A Hunt elbow saw Overeem wobbling in the second round, but he kept Hunt pinned against the ropes for much of the bout after that, scoring regularly with knee kicks.
