EPP head Manfred Webber calls for suspension of funding to Euro-skeptic groups in EP

Matter to be discussed on Wednesday with EC

Newsroom March 14 09:58

German MEP and leader of the EPP group Manfred Webber said the EU should amend regulations to avoid funding parties which were opposed to the EU. Mr. Webber argued that the EU should re-assess the current funding rules towards political formations that were euro-phobic. “We are open, everyone has his own opinion, but we must see the issue of whether Europe is foolish enough to fund parties that are acting against its interests”, Mr. Weber stressed. The matter is expected to be discussed in the EP on Wednesday at Strasbourg in a joint discussion with the European Commission. The German politician sent a letter to the President of the European Commission, Jean Claude Juncker requesting that the EC legislates on the issue. Most narrational political parties have been incorporated in wider European political formations that are eligible for funding by EU organs. In 2015 the group called Europe of Freedom and Direct Democracy Group (EFDDG), in which Nigel Farage’s Euro-skeptic UKIP party was dominant received approximately 821,000 euros from the EU.
