The Wine Route of the Lakes: Western Macedonia

Vineyards, wine, beautiful food, amazing places: Everything you need!

Newsroom January 9 09:04

In the heart of Northern Greece, lies the region of Western Macedonia where it is possible to experience the picturesque Wine Route of the Lakes.

The route starts in the area of the PDO Amynteo vineyards, where red and rosé wines made from the Greek variety Xinomavro are produced.

A visit to lake Petres and lake Vegoritida can be part of the itinerary as well as a walk through the wildlife park located in Nymfaio. This traditional settlement located on Mount Vernon (1.350 m above sea level) has been designed as one of the ten most picturesque villages of Europe, according to UNESCO. Pork, cheese, and potatoes combine to produce the local favorite neveska, a favorite dish that well pairs with Macedonian wines.

One more point of interest in the region is Florina, home to PGI Florina wines. Other than wine tasting, the area also offers the possibility to visit different museums, such as the Museum of Modern Art and the Archeological Museum. In the area, the Presepes lakes and national park are worth a visit as well. Here, lovers of winter sports can try the runs of the Vigla Pisoderi Ski Center.

Here, it’s possible to visit several traditional Byzantine buildings as well as the Ecclesiastic Museum and wine cellars. Not far, visitors can sample the magnificent PDO Krokos (Safron) of Kozani.

Fans of photography will love the region due to the many stone-built bridges to see, such as the ones in Portisa, Alatopetra, and Kastro. For those interested in the gastronomic side of the Lake region, cheese and mushrooms are the local landmark products of Grevena.
