In the most recent version of the Strategy for Balkans, in the chapter on the rule of law, the European Union has made it quite clear to the countries of the region that they can become members of the European Union, but not in the current state.
This text says that the political elites in the countries of the region have ties with criminal structures.
“Today, the state in these countries has been captured and this includes ties with organized crime and corruption in all government levels”, says the most recent version of the strategy, underlining that all of this fuels the feeling of impunity and inequality.
