1,850 ‘irregular migrants’ reach Greek islands in January, FRONTEX report says

Similar number to last year during January

Newsroom February 13 01:37

The arrivals of “irregular migrants” on the Greek islands were estimated at 1,850 in January, according to an official report by Frontex Tuesday.

More specifically, Frontex said that last month the number of “irregular migrants” located using the so-called “eastern Mediterranean route”, reaching primarily the Greek islands, decreased by 43% from the previous month to 1,850. The number is close to last year’s arrivals in January. Immigrants are mainly Syrians and Iraqis.

Concerning the “Western Balkan Route”, Frontex observed that the number of “irregular migrants” identified was “relatively low, almost 300 people” thanks to “close cooperation between the countries in the region in controlling the borders’.
