The government and its latest Home Secretary, Priti Patel, has thrown the future of EU citizens in the UK into doubt once again this week, by signalling an end to freedom of movement for the 3 million-strong group immediately after a no-deal Brexit on 31 October.
The move, heavily criticised, would contradict PM Johnson’s previous promises and, as the latest ONS figures show, affect the lives of citizens from across the continent, as well as endangering the freedom of UK citizens in the EU at the time of the country’s disorderly exit. In 2018, the largest group of EU citizens in the UK were born in Poland (905 thousand).
