Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis had a telephone conversation today with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in view of the upcoming European Council (July 17-18).
No details on the content of the conversation have been released by the Prime Minister’s office.
It is noted that the conversation takes place in the aftermath of the German initiative to try and bridge that distance between Athens and Ankara, in order to de-escalate the tension in Greek-Turkish relations.
Following Erdogan’s decision to turn Hagia Sophia into a mosque and Nikos Dendias’ clear warning that in the event of a Greek-Turkish crisis, Athens would seek the assistance of the 26 EU member states under Article 42 of the founding treaty, the German diplomacy took over seeking to mediate to create a credible channel of communication between Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Tayyip Erdogan.
