Pro-Erdogan media in Turkey beat the war drums against Greece

Greece will lose territory, retired intelligence officer tells Yeni Safak newspaper

Newsroom August 21 02:41

Turkish media is fomenting an atmosphere of all out military conflict Greece in an effort to raise the domestic public’s morale following the release of a photo of a Turkish warship with a huge hole in its starboard after an accidental collision with a Greek frigate at the height of tensions between the two navies last week.

In an extensive article published in pro-Ergogan newspaper Yeni Safak with the title :”What will happen in the event of a possible war between Turkey and Greece”, the author attempts to present the huge defeat Greece would suffer in the event of a possible war with Turkey.

Yeni Safak presents the opinion of a retired head of the Intelligence Department of the Turkish General Staff Ismail Hakkı Pekin, according to which a possible war between the two countries will result in the clear defeat of Greece and a serious loss of what it has gained so far at sea and especially the islands.

The Turkish analyst notes the military superiority of Turkey, pointing out that the EU’s involvement will be limited only to the political support to Greece, in the event of a hot incident. According to Pekin, the developments in the eastern Mediterranean are linked to those in the Middle East at large, while he claims that due to the number of the large and small islands in the Aegean Sea, Greece will be unable to defend them in a possible conflict with Turkey.

In recent days, more and more pro-government Turkish media are reporting not only on the possibility of an isolated hot incident with Greece, but also on a larger scale conflict. Opposition analysts say that Erdogan’s government is trying to psychologically prepare Turkish public opinion for a heated confrontation with Greece, presenting a narrative that Turkey is the “victim” of Western countries’ aggression as they are dreaming of a new “Treaty of Sèvres”.
