A large forest fire has broken out in the Mani region, Laconia on Saturday.

According to the fire brigade, the front started between Gythio and Areopolis in the Drakoulianika area but has now spread.

Part of the front is rapidly sweeping towards the mountain and a second is moving towards nearby settlements.

According to sources, the settlement nearest the blaze is that of Langadas with 5-6 houses.

Strong winds of up to 6 Beaufort blowing in the area is hampering the firefighters’ efforts.

57 firefighters with 20 vehicles and two pedestrian units are trying to extinguish the flames, while 4 planes and 5 helicopters are attempting to drop water from the air.

Meanwhile, by order of the Chief of the Fire Brigade, Stefanos Kolokouris, a team from the Arson Crimes Directorate is going to the area to investigate the causes of the fire.
