A strong earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale occurred early Tuesday morning off the island of Karpathos.
According to the Geodynamic Institute, the epicenter was located 156 kilometers southeast of the island of the Dodecannese with a focal depth was 66.3 kilometers.
The tremor was felt in Crete and the whole Dodecanese island complex.
Foreign media reported that the earthquake was felt as far away as Egypt and Israel.
Alexandria on the Mediterranean coast and Assiut in Upper Egypt are among the cities whose residents say their homes and buildings were shaken by the quake.
There is no information from the authorities about victims so far.
