The president of the Movement for Change (KINAL), Fofi Gennimata, passed away at the age of 56, after a battle with cancer at Evangelismos Hospital, where she was being treated.

Fofi Gennimata was rushed to hospital on October 12 as her underlying disease recurred. The news of her hospitalisation caused a wave of support from the country’s political world, as started her new battle with cancer.

Fofi Gennimata entered the political arena carrying a heavy name, as her father was Georgios Gennimatas, a leading member of PASOK in the 1980s. Her father died of cancer in April 1995, just seven months after the death of his wife and mother of current PASOK president Kakia Vergou.

In 2008, at the age of 43, she was first diagnosed with cancer. Regular examinations due to a hereditary history revealed cancer of the right breast. She then underwent successful surgery at Henry Dunant Hospital. Shortly afterwards, she travelled to New York and was admitted to Memorial Hospital for appropriate treatment.

Her latest admission was short as the disease was aggressive leaving no room for doctors to treat her. Fofi Gennimata leaves behind three children.
