Invasion of Ukraine: Mitsotakis’ in Parliament: “We have always been on the right side of history”

"Defending freedom is a global issue", he said adding that "Putin is trying to return to the era of hegemony"

Newsroom March 1 11:35

Kyriakos Mitsotakis delivered a speech with “clear positions” on the role of Greece in this completely new environment that is taking shape in Europe and the world, informing the Parliament about how our country will proceed after what has happened on the last days.

The Prime Minister described, in essence, the “compass” for the next steps of Greece in geopolitical and energy level, since a new world has been formed.

Mr. Mitsotakis; associates said, he did not seek to enter into a political confrontation with the opposition parties, he just described the “clean choices” that our country makes on all fronts.

The Prime Minister said, the country has made its geopolitical choices for a long time. This explains the fact that our country has led the European processes for tough sanctions on Russia and its partners, but also the fact that for the first time in decades he broke the taboo of sending defense equipment to a war zone. On Monday, two more C-130s with humanitarian and defense equipment for Ukraine left.

As for geopolitics, Mr. Mitsotakis emphasized that the unacceptable Russian invasion of an independent state can by no means be justified.

The Prime Minister considers that his timely position, together with President Macron, on the need for Europe to formulate a single defense doctrine and a common security policy in practice, not in words, is justified.

Mr. Mitsotakis emphasized that our country is an active part of European diplomatic and defense policy, while he himself these days is in an open line with the heads of European institutions and other leaders on a daily basis.

At the same time, Mr. Mitsotakis refered to energy, declaring the need for Greece and Europe, in general, to become independent of Russian gas, which creates “hostage” conditions.

And this has to do not only with the need for immediate interventions, to address the increased energy costs, but for the need for energy autonomy of our country, in this case.

And this, as government sources say, goes through the cooperation schemes that our country is discussing, but also through the faster promotion of Renewable Energy Sources.
