“What is important is to send a clear message that the Alliance is totally united in terms of supporting Ukraine”, said the Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, attending the NATO Summit.
PM Mitsotakis pointed out that the sanctions package is strengthened. “We must make sure there is no sanctions leakage”, he stated.
His phrase is interpreted as an allusion to Turkey that has not taken action against Russia, something that both the 29 member states of the Euro-Atlantic Alliance, the EU countries and the candidate countries are doing. The Prime Minister also referred to the issue of defense spending in Europe. “I consider it very important that many European member states have realized, as a result of this crisis, that Europe needs to increase its geopolitical footprint and needs to spend more on defense”, he said, adding that Greece spends more than 2% of GDP on defense spending.
At the same time, Mr. Mitsotakis said that European leaders must be very careful about the measures they implement so as not to cause more pain to European citizens than to Russia. Europe, on the other hand, needs to move as quickly as possible on the issue of oil and gas dependence.
